Nerve Fiber Testing
- Pathology Partners Network performs Epidermal Nerve Fiber Density (ENFD) testing in our Knoxville laboratory.
- A common clinical problem, small-fiber neuropathy, (SFN) is a subtype of sensory neuropathy. This test has shown great value in establishing the diagnosis of SFN. SFN is often undiagnosed, and a definite diagnosis can help determine how to best manage the patient, and is covered by most insurance companies.
- Sections of the skin biopsy are immunostained with a polyclonal antibody to PGP 9.5 which reveals the separate ENF’s and their location within the tissue. Small nerve fibers in the skin can be seen and counted by our highly qualified dermatopathologist.
- Specimen requirements: 2-3ml punch biopsy in a routine formalin bottle
- Turnaround time: 4-7 days
